this is going to be a stupid question, but I was just trying to setup a VPN connection and I noticed I had a wireless lan network in my network connections. So just out of curiousity, I disconnected my lan cable, "enabled" the wireless connection and bang, I got free internet. The properties show 11mbps and it shows wireless network connection (peer-to-peer).

how am I getting free internet? I don't live near anything except I'm in an apt. I don't live under any store fronts or anything like that. I'm in a residential neighborhood.

I heard of something called hotspots? Am I in one?

Please don't tell me i've been paying for a cable modem connection this whole time when I didn't need to

Is this legal?

Sorry for all the questions...
Thanks.

more than likely somebody hooked their cable up to a wireless router so they could have wireless in thier apt. and have no idea they are providing it for you.

Stay away because if something did happen - I wouldn't want to be anywhere near it. Besides if they turn it off or move you are back in boat 1.
