Hello,

I am sure someone here can give me some pointers on the following;

I've asked by a client to provide a wireless LAN in their new office.
They also would like to have all their internal telephone traffic routed over this wireless network AND have a gateway so they can make & receive calls from their wifi VOIP handsets to and from external numbers. They also want the possibility that an incoming call to extension "x" will also be routed to the specific phone.

I presume there are a number of solutions for this but I would appreciate recommendations and/or pointers form people on this forum.

Regards, Evert Bopp.

I do not know a good enough wireless technology for VoIP. The conversations would sound gargled and possibly broken sentences. Stick with copper for VoIP.

there are a number of solutions, but all will require a some type of VoIP gateway/router. you can get a complete solution from Cisco products.

VoIP on WLAN is fine, as long as it's designed carefully...i.e. don't let someone do their first project for you....

keep in mind security limitations, allot of cisco voip wireless phones only support leap.

The single model of Cisco 802.11b phone that is available, the 7920, supports LEAP and static WEP only.

There are no other Cisco wireless phones.

I think in you're final year of engineering school, you should be able to design and build a wireless network by yourself.

cisco is comming up with next generation wi-fi voip phones.
there are tons of other vendors too, just google.
spectralink seems to be the leader for complete solution so far.

I'd be interested in hearing from anyone that's found a WiFi-VoIP handset with a battery life of more than a few hours. We've tried several, and none of them will come close to standing up to business class usage. 2 to 3 hrs talk time and it's back in the cradle.

My input on some of the comments above: Avoid wifi voip handsets for now - if they want cordless, put a pots handset on an ATA. As far as WiFi for backhauling VoIP; it can be done, but as previously stated - don't try to sell your first attempt. Practice Practice Practice. QoS interoperability between your AP's, switches and routers will send you straight to the nearest bar for a healty round of doubles!
