My wireless network works fine, albeit at 2.0 mb/s and a verylow to a low connection quality. My problem is this, when i try to download a large file around 100 Mb, the download will cease. It will say for instance 7 mb out of 100 mb downloaded, the little file transfer animation will continue, and it will show the download speed. none of the numbers fluctuate. it's as if it just stops for no reason. the download box will not dissapear unless i click cancel. has anyone else had this problem? if so whats the fix? I have no trouble visiting sites or launching flash or shockwave. and smaller files are not a problem, its just the big files. it's soooo frustrating!
Equipment:
Lynksys BEFW(something) AP/router
D-Link Air DWL-520 PCI wireless card
EDIT: mpkn3rd you have helped me before, just wanted to say that. and, do you know how disable a feature that allows the signal transmission to change on its own, for instance, my wireless signal fluctuates from 2.0mb/sec to 1.0 mb/sec, is there a way to disable this? i think this may be the culprit
Hello again, I think the real problem is the signal strength. It comes into play more so when you are downloading that just surfing. It has quite a bit more overhead which will really slow it down. That is why the signal strength is fluctuating. It is trying to find a speed at which the data packets will not be corrupted. Because that means the packets have to be re- transmitted. Which then slows the bandwidth down even more.
I am very surprised that you are not having more problems. Can you describe the setup a little better. How far away are you from the router? Are there any physical obstacles in between? Is there only one client using the router? If so, maybe we can work on an enhanced antenna that will get your signal strength where it needs to be.

My network is setup like this:
MAIN(Windows Me, Desktop) is connected to the Linksys BEFW11S4(ETHERNET), the Linksys BEFW11S4 connects to a DSL modem this is all downstairs, that all works fine... the problem occurs with EXPRESS999(XP Home Edition, Desktop) which is a wireless client and is upstairs. The BEFW11S4 and MAIN are no more than 60 feet from EXPRESS999. I have the D-Link Air DWL-520 Wireless PCI (rev. E) hooked up to EXPRESS999. All set to Infrastructure. PPPoE.
no major obsticles in the way except a few walls, if your antenna solution is that pringles can thing, no go. i had it almost set up a while ago and my mom walked into her home office where the router/AP is as i was messing with it, needless to say she didnt appreciate how it looked, and said she couldnt have that in there because clients come in. haha, do you understand what i mean about the auto-signal detect feature, can that be changed? ive noticed it changes frequently by mouse-over the icon on the tray. if i could somehow set it to permanent 1.0 mb/sec and test it out, that would help satisfy my supicions.
So, there is only the router and one wireless client? If so then you can get a directional antenna for each or one or the other. Every little bit will help. These reflectors will actually double the output power when compared to the standard vertical dipoles. The pringle's can antenna is not a very good one, by the way. There are small panel antennas as well as higher gain omni-directional ones that look nice as well.

You can set the bandwidth speed in the router controls, but I would not recommend it. I suggest leaving it on auto. It will almost constantly seek to find the optimum speed setting.
