Wireless internet speed?

I’m a newbie.
I just installed a Belkin 802.11b wireless router that will connect a PC and a laptop wirelessly. The Pc is Windows XP Pro and the laptop is 98SE. What internet speeds can I expect? When the PC was hard wired before I installed the wireless router I was able to download files at 300 kb/sec. But now when connected wirelessly my internet speed is only 20 kb/sec with the wireless pc right next to the router. Is this the best internet speed I will get? If not how do I do better. Thanks.

Welcome to the forum. 11b if everything is working correctly will have a throughput of approximately 5mb/sec. I am not sure where you are testing that download speed at, but that has an impact as well. I would suggest using this site to do any further tests, unless you are already aware of it or one similar. Then I apologize.

Other problems might be outside RF interferences or if you are having encryption issues. Are you using a different brand name wireless client adaptor? If so and you have WEP/WPA enabled try it without or at a different key strength. One last thing, you may not like to hear, but I have never had good luck with Belkin equipment, it is just too low end and causes too many problems. Sorry.
