I am using Linksys WRTG54G wireless router which is connected to a Netgear ADSL DM602 modem.I am using Linksys WPC54G PCMCIA wireless cards on laptops which are runnign either Win XP Pro (with the latest patches) or Win 98 SE (with the latest patches applied).

The Router firmware is 2.07.7
The PCMCIA cards driver is 3.50.22.11
I am using Infrastruture mode and Channel 11
I am using WEP 128

I keep getting timeouts when connecting to the Internet for browsing or emails - only way to resolve it to do a power cycle i.e. switch cable modem, router and printer server off. Then it strats to works again for a few minutes.

What could be causing this? Does anyone else get this problem?

Thanks

Welcome to the forum. There could be many things causing the drops. Is there any repetitive timing to the drops or are they random? Where are the clients in relation to the router? Does it happen when they are in close proximity to the router? Are there any other wireless devices in the building, like 2.4gHz phones? Does the problem occur on all the clients or just one? Have you tried using different channels? Do you have WEP enabled, if so have you tried with it disabled or at a different encryption length? What are the operating systems and client hardware? Did this just recently occur or has it bean this way since the initial setup? When you are getting the drops, is it just from the Internet and you can still see the other clients or do you feel it is a wireless problem?

The timings are random - it can be very few minutes. The clients are in a number of rooms but the problem occurs for all clients including one which is next to the router. There are some mobile phones in the house but the problem has got this worse in the last 2 weeks - the phones were there for many months before that.

I have tried different channels - currently 11. I have WEP enabled and having it disabled causes same problems.

Client 1 has XP pro, Client 2 &3 have Win98 SE

Always had the timeouts from Day 1 but then I had to powercycle every few days - now its every few minutes. When the drop occurs I cannot get to the Internet and hence IE adn Outlook fail

I think the problem is related to the wireless router but cannot be 100% sure

Thanks

Can you still get to the net if you hardwire your connection instead of using the wireless?

If so, then your wireless side of the router may be the problem. If not, check your logs, see if the modem is losing connection. It could be another problem with the connection, especially if rebooting the modem allows you to connect again and you haven't touched the router.

I have consulted the ISP who say the problem is due to NAV running with email scanning set ON. They advise to turn it off and then problem will be resolved

I encountered the similar problem after upgraded my WRT54G to latest firmware 2.0X from 1.3.X.

My client PC is using WMP54g on Windows XP Pro which can connect to WRT54G without any glittering and stable speed and signal. But now, I always got signal strength drop and rise, and speed is also changing from 24M to 54M.

I use channel 11 also, but I use Pc-cillin instead of NAV.

Even though I have disabled email scanning in NAV, I still get the timeout/drop happening. ONly way to resolve it is to do a pwer cycle on the DM602 router.

Since I upgraded the firmware to the latest one for the WRT54G, the client running XP works fine. However, the Win98 clients are hardly able to get a conneciton now. The clients are running WPC54G cards - has anyone had this?

Thanks

I also got another problem, ie, I cannot surf web on my iPAQ 4150 though it shows the status connected to my WRT54G. It worked fine before I upgrade to new firmware of WRT54g.

I really doubt if the problems are caused by the new firmware, but cannot prove as I cannot fallback to a older version.
