Can someone please help me with setting up the WEP on my home WLAN? I need to get it setup because I realized that it's a bad idea to run my home office on a WLAN with no security.

I have a BroMax FreePort access point (http://store.yahoo.com/justdeals/bromfreep80w.html for a picture - it's not on the BroMax website) connected to a D-Link router connected to a 3COM cable modem. My laptop (Gateway Solo) has a Proxim WLAN PC-Card.

The AP has a web-based setup and my WLAN card has a utility that I load to set the WEP settings.

On the web-based setup I have the option to enable/disable WEP and manually enter 64 or 128 bit hexadecimal codes. After that I can choose to "deny unencrypted data" and I have to choose whether I want Open/Shared Key/Both for my authentication. My WLAN card has a pass-phrase utility to generate hex codes and also I can manually enter them. I basically just choose to enter the code manually because I have to do so on the AP setup anyway.

What I try to do is enable the WEP and enter the key in the web-based AP setup (I have tried all 0's to randomly selected keys) and then reboot the WEP. This kicks me off the network and then I can't get back online even if I enter in the same WEP key on my WLAN cards setup.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this???

I would think automatic generation of the WEP code is a better choice, at least until you have the client and AP talking.
