I have a laptop connected to a wireless Netgear wgr614v2 router used as an access point for internet and home networking. It works great at home in Michigan. I recently traveled to Colorado with laptop and router and hooked up to a cable modem (same as home) but the connection speed is sloooooow. When I bypassed the router and connected directly to the cable modem I had great speed. Are there environmental issues that can affect Wifi performance? Any suggestions?

I assumebecause it is a notebook that it does not matter how close you are to the router it still has problems? Did this cable ISP require any different settings? Are you using DHCP from the router or from the cable modem? Is there a possibility of other wireless nodes in the vicinity? Do you have any other 2.4gHz devices in this house?

Distance from the router does not matter. ISP settings are not an issue because when I bypass the router and connect directly to the cable modem I have excellent speed. Don't know about DHCP stuff. I have lot's of wireless phones in the house but don't know if they are 2.4 or 900.

ISP configuration might play an issue, it is one thing people wrongly assume. It has to deal with IP addressing. Wireless has an additional IP address to deal with that the wired portion does not.

Did you have the phones at the other place as well. Where is the base station located?

Thanks for your help.

Yes, I have similar phones located at both homes and the base station is near where I typically use the laptop. When I checked with my ISP in CO they came out and hooked up my laptop directly to the cable modem. It worked great so it appeared that my problems were with the wifi gear.

I guess that will become your environmental issue then. Have you tried the wireless connection with them off? It may not be a constant interference, but it will have an impact on the preformance of your wireless system.
