I am currently having problems accessing excel spreadsheets using my wireless network.

Using laptop with edimax EW-7101PCG card to access files on desktop PC which is connected to Eimax Broadband Router and Access Point BR 6014WG.

I don't have any other problems accessing or transferring any other file types nor do i have the problem with the excel files when i access / transfer using a wired connection.

Can anyone help me solve this problem. I have contacted the hardware manufacturer who says it is a problem for micr%s*ft and microsoft say it is a problem for Edimax to resolve.

Thanks in advance

Neil

This is a long shot and might be similar to a previous problem I encountered. Go to the configuration setup of the router and change the "MTU Size" under Lan setup from 1500 to 1492. Then 1440 if 1492 does not work. The correct MTU (maximum transfer units) setting is usually 1492. This is because there is an 8-byte "wrapper" to make the PPP packet "look like" an Ethernet packet to the network card. An MTU setting of 1500 will slow transfers substantially due to packet-fragment resends, and then cause the time outs.

You say you have a problem but you never stated what the problem was... are you entirely unable to access the file? A little more information would be nice if possible.

Sorry James - I should have made it clearer.

When I try to open the file it just will not open and displays the error message "cannot open file". Excel then tries to recover the file and eventually it opens but with lots of data missing.

I have tried dragging and dropping the file from the network location onto the local hard drive and still get the same message.

Have tried zipping the file and extracting to the local hard drive and also zipping and dropping on the local hard drive and always get an error message.

Error only happens to excel files through woreless connection.

Did you even try what I suggested? Just curious.

Mpkn3rd

I had a look last night but could not find the MTU settings.

I looked under the LAN & Wireless settings but could not see any setting that referred to "MTU". Would it be called something else.

Under the wireless options I could change the fragment threshold from 256 - 2346, the RTS threshold fropm 0 - 2347 and the beacon interval from 20 - 1024ms

I will have another go at it tonight and let you know how i get on.

It is called the fragmentation threshold. I would just try it, as it solved a similar strange problem. If the router has issues, you just have to reset it to the default configuration.

Still having problems.

The error message says "Unable to read file".

Fragment threshold is set at 1492.
RTS threshold is set at 2347.
Beacon interval is set at 100ms.
Preamble type is set at Long Preamble.

When you say that you do not have any problem accessing the excel files from a wired connection, is that using the same computer that you have problems with when connected via wireless or another wired computer?

Exact same computer, exact same files.

Only difference is cat 5 cable from Access Point / Broadband Router to Laptop PC instead of wireless connection.

I am about at the end of my know-how. Is there any way you can test the card and router with different pieces of equipment? Like try to access an excel file at a friend's house, or have a friend try to access one of the excel files at your house using wireless. It may help isolate what is causing the problem. I know you said it is only the excel files, but I can not rmember if you have file and printer sharing enabled in the TCP/IP settings for the wireless card. I will keep trying to dig something up. I also would really appreciate hearing what was the problem when you solve it.
