Ok, before I begin, let me just tell you that networking is a huge weakness of mine. That said, here we go:

I was setting up my wireless network with no problems until it came time to configure my router.

I'm using Verizon DSL with MSN Premium with the BEFW11S4 Linksys Wireless Router. I set up my Ethernet card no problem, and then I started to set up my router following the directions to the letter on the setup wizard.

So I get to one part of the setup where it wants me to be connected directly to my DSL modem. I did that, and it worked no problem.

The next step involved plugging an ethernet cable from my computer to the router, and from the router to the DSL modem. Again, I did that no problem and have doubled checked all connections.

After that, it wanted me to hit 'Next' so that it could configure the router. However, it gave me an error message saying it could not connect to the Internet, despite the fact that all lights are on and green on both my router and my DSL modem. I try it a couple more times with various setups and basically the same results.

I've tried checking both the Linksys and Verizon websites with solutions, and both have the same info as the setup guide. I have already tried calling Linksys tech support. They had me reset the router, ping it, etc. I've gotten good results from that. I was able to ping my router no problem.

When it comes time for me to then enter 192.168.1.1 in IE to enter the router setup page, it gives me a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error and MSN Explorer opens up wanting me to connect. I normally connect through MSN Explorer because my user id is set up through it and all that good stuff, but I keep getting stuck at this step.

I've got no clue what I'm supposed to do. I would think that it's not even supposed to try and connect to the Internet since it's supposed to be for the router. If I'm online and I punch in those numbers it takes me to a Westell site with diagnostics, etc. for my DSL modem.

Is there anything off the top of your heads which may be a solution? I'm going to try and contact Verizon when I get the chance and patience to do so.

Welcome to the forum. Is this the initial install of DSL and router? Or was the DSL access working before the router was added? If not what was the Internet access setup before? Did you have the computer setup to automatically dial out before with MSN? Is the Ethernet cable from the DSL modem to the router plugged in the WAN port? Also you did not seem to try and ping the DSL modem? Do you know what IP address it has on the internal and external network? Are you familiar with crossover cables and do you have any of them in use?

I did notice some strange configurations in the first image. You have the router IP as the default gateway and both DNS servers. That seems wrong to me. The DSL modem should be the default gateway and your ISP's DNS servers should be listed not the routers IP address. I think you need to determine what the DSL modem's internal network IP address is. I am wondering if it is the same as the router's. The second clue is that when you are on line as you say and type the same IP address you get the DSL modem. That address is non-routable on the Internet, so you are still on your network and that is why I would try disconnecting the router from the DSL and then trying to connect to it (the router) with a wired connection and see if the router configuration page comes up. If so, change the IP address to 192.168.1.2. Turn off DHCP and set the default gateway as the DSL modem.

See if that makes any difference.

Thank you very much for your help.

I tried exactly what you said. I hardwired the router with the computer and left the ethernet cable for the DSL unplugged, and it worked perfectly.

Everything seems to be running smothly now, but if I run into any problems, I know where to go to find the answer.

Thanks again!

Good news. Also the fact that you gave great descriptions and information made the guess on my part easier. The images also helped a lot.
