I have just been told to upgrade my Dell laptop to access Wi-fi LAN and also to start using it for email access while traveling rather than my old cell phone wired system. I have no idea what I am doing on this, any good advise or direction?
Welcome to the forum. There are many options available to you and it really depends on what you do and how you travel. It would be nice to know if you are just concerned about getting your notebook ready or you have to determine a plan and carrier to go with. On a chance I linked several of the plans available to allow you to use Wi-Fi at locations specified in the plans and do exactly what you want. There are free hotspots as well as pay per time Wi-Fi at Starbucks and other businesses. It just takes getting familiar with what is available in a given area.

If it is a hardware matter let us know the make and model of the notebook along with operating system. We can help you decide what would be the best device for you then as well.
