Previously, my wired network was getting individual IPs from the ISP directly. I had my wifi router connected to the network, giving internet access to my wifi devices (but not access to the LAN, as the IPs were of different domains).

I recently reconfigured my network so that my wifi router does DHCP for my wifi devices *and* my wired computers. (primarily because I wanted my wireless laptop to be able to access files on the LAN). So now *all* the computers go through the router to get a local IP.

Today I just realized that I can no longer connect to my ISP's NEWS server. I temporarily removed the router, and allowed my computer to get an IP directly from the ISP (like it was before), and everything was back to normal. I put the router back into the equation, and I cannot access the News server again.

My router is the Soyo Aerielink AWRO3101 (802.11g), which has been great until I discovered this little problem. I am using Zone Alarm, but it never prevented me from accessing the news server in the past.

Gibson's Shields Up says that my port 113 is closed. When this computer wasn't connected to the router, port 113 was stealth. I tried putting this computer into DMZ mode, and port 113 was stealth -- but I still couldn't access the News Server.

There's no directly 'port forwarding' option on the router, but there was the option to setup a virtual server. I set it up so that it allowed port 113 to this computer, but I still couldn't connect to the News Server.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Thanks.

It appears to be that Zone Alarm is blocking the port. You said it worked before, but that was with a different IP address and signature. Also you do not mention the operating system, but if it is XP, you may want to disable the builtin firewall until the issue is resolved. I would strongly suggest keeping the NAT/wireless router on line as before all your computers were exposed to the Internet. I suggested the part about disabling the firewalls as you did not mention whether you tried that or not.

Oops, I forgot to mention that I Did try disabling Zone Alarm, and I do not have the built in XP firewall enabled. Thanks for the suggestion. Anything else?? :S

I have been thinking about this problem quite a bit. I forgot to ask what the broadband connection was? What is the first device that is downstream of the connection? What is the Ip numbering system used by your ISP? And everything else is working correctly when you have the wireless router downstream of the Internet connection?

Broadband connection:
Cable modem

IP numbering:
24.xx.xxx.xx

First device that is downstream:
Not sure what you mean... But the following systems are on my LAN:
- Pocket PC on 802.11b wifi
- Laptop on 802.11g wifi
- 5 to 6 other computers in the house that are on at various times (1 computer is on 24/7)

Yes, everything else appears to be fine. Email, web surfing, connecting to FTPs, ICQ, MSN, etc. Actually I was playing around with my old dyndns.org domains, and I downloaded the DynSite client, but it keeps saying the host is not found, so it won't update it. I don't know if this problem is related (I haven't tried it without the router connected though).

Thanks so much for helping me out, mpkn3rd! It's driving me crazy too, even browsing for other wifi routers :S

Hello,

is it possible to open this port on your
AWRO3101? it is possible that this port is
blocked.

news should just work without any port forwarding unless there is some bug in your router firmware.

chek your hostname setup in the router dns or dhcp section.

it may have something to do with registering a hostiname with the isp's dhcp server.

also try to authenticate to the news server they are options in agent that allow you to specify username and password try your default login or email address.

I dont Know exactly how AWRO3101 works, but the Firewall in some Router you have to open some Ports.
youre right normally it should work.

What is your cable modem? I am not convinced something is wrong with the wireless router yet, as it is just related to one port. I have had the experience where even disabling firewalls did not shut them off completely. I know it is a pain, but I wonder if you would want to un-install ZA and see what happens. I know ZA works when wired, but that is using a completely different set of rules than when using the wireless router. When you are using the wireless router can you see the other computers and and share files/printers? Also is this inability to get the news server on all computers or just the one? Next are you using dynamic DNS for something?

There's no discrete option that says "Port Forwarding" like other routers do. But there's the option of using Virtual Servers, where I can assign a port to a specific computer on the network. I've tried doing that for ports 113 and 119, but it doesn't work. Actually when I forward port 119, I get a TCP/IP error from Outlook Express :S

Shields Up says that all ports but 113 are stealth. 113 is closed.

My cable modem is a Terayon, one of those verticle blue ones that looks like a shark fin.

You know, I Was reading that right-clicking and shutting down ZA doesn't completely. So I will try to do a complete un-install of it (heck, it's been bugging me to perform an update lately anyways; might as well make it fresh).

Yes, I can see all the other computers on the network, and I can share the printer on my server computer. In fact, that was the whole reason I changed over to use the wifi router for Everything -- I wanted to be able to access the files and the printer on the server computer, while using my wireless laptop.

Yes, this inability to access the news server is the same on ALL the computers. Both wired and wireless. But again, they all have zone alarm installed, so I will try uninstalling it temporarily and let you guys know what happens tonight.

Dynamic DNS? You mean that dyndns.org stuff? I was just playing around with it, hoping to use it for my (seldom used) FTP, so that I can give my friends the dyns address, so that I won't have to worry when my ISP changes my IP from time to time. No biggie.

Thanks so much!
