I'm trying to figure out a way to block wi-fi signals coming from neighboring buildings. In one case, I have a building that is fully covered by my wireless network, but in a few rooms with windows directly facing an appartment building, I can see as many as 8 other networks. When that many networks are visible (and probably more on the way), it's impossible to choose a non-occupied channel and we have trouble operating the network in those few rooms. I was thinking... maybe there is a way to block the wi-fi signals originating from outside the building. Metalic window tint perhaps? Any body have any experience or other ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Sam

I have had a similar problem at one of my clients. I tried two options, they both worked, it is just how much money you want to spend.

My first option was to locate special nodes in those trouble spots so that the node's signal was much stronger than any of the other signals. That worked in some areas. I even went to the extent of using enterprise AP's with external antennas to get the best signal strength possible.

The next solution I used when that did not work was to set up an 802.11a network in a trouble area. It is much more resistant to interference. Actually 11b is as well, but in many cases that is becoming popular and will have the same problem. 11a also has the curse of not having the coverage area because of the higher frequency. But in your case that will be an advantage if there are other 11a networks nearby.
