Hi all,

I'm researching in hopes of adding wireless to my existing network.

I'm just curious if I wanted wireless coverage both on the second floor of the house and in the basement, is it possible with a single AP/router intelligently placed in the house?

I'm hoping that it is possible as I don't want to invest too much in wireless technology at the moment as its still relatively new.

And what are some brands of wireless hardware should I avoid if I want reliable functionality with maximum range at a moderate price?

Thanks

Multi-floor coverage is certainly possible, depending on the house and the equipment used. Better quality and reliability are highly correlated with price. You should do some research to decide for yourself which brands and models have the features you want, then read through the archives for comments on those specific units.

- Put the AP on the Main flr.
- Linksys = Cheap = pretty good coverage
- You'll never know the coverage, untill you pop an AP in, wireless coverage is always unpredictable, too many interfering devices and materials.

if the house is newer with regular sheetrock walls you should be fine placeing a consumer grade access point in a central location on the 1st floor. If the house has wire mesh / plaster walls you will need a high power access point such as the Engenious ap3 plus
