Hope some one can help me. I have a Belkin 54G set up, basically a WAP, tied into my conventional wired LAN, plus a card in my laptop plus a PCI card in my desk top system – all operating under XP.

In general its fine when I am boing work related things, such as accessing printers, files on the LAN or surfing the web. The problems come when I try to play games on the desktop system.

What I find is that after a while the system just locks and I have to go for a hard reset. I should point out that in all cases I am not trying to access either the web or the LAN through these games. If I disable the PCI card then all if fine and I can play, but of course without LAN or web access.

Originally I thought it was a conflict (IRQ, etc) but having isolated the hardware (as far as I can see) and still find the problem persists I don’t think it can be a hardware conflict.

As this happens with any games (different types and different developers) I try to play I don’t think it can be an issue of a specific game or game style. I wonder if its some conflict with between the driver for the card and the common MS games environments (DirectX, DirectSounds, etc).

I have spoken to Belkin and all they will say is “it’s a systems problem and hence not down to us” – thanks B! I have always bought Belkin as in the past it seems to be solid reliable kit. After this experience I am not so sure….

So that’s my story, any one with any advise or even similar experiences – please get in touch. I really would be grateful.

Regards

Glendream : for what it's worth. Read my post [casw] and my experiences with this Belkin setup.

I am less than happy. I am an experienced network guy for many years, and this has to be the most frustrating network problem I have had to deal with.

I also spoke to Belkin, they tried to talk me through configuring the wireless setup, and then said, it's a Microsoft problem.

Let me know if you have any futher luck.

Colin,

Sorry I cant help. Basically I gave up - the PCI card sits on a shelf on my room gathering dust and the desktop box now has its old Cat5 cable link...

As I said in my original posting, i was amazed by the Belkin position as I had always thought (and experienced) their kit as absolutely top notch. Obviously I have reassessed my opinon, not just for this card but also for the rest of the Belkin range.

They may be right, it may be an MS problem, but to simply slope shoulders and walk away from customers is not, in my humble opinion, a mark of good customer focus.

Ok rant over - lessons learnt and next time I will look else where.

Just a thought, I continued to try and get my pc-card working last night in the new laptop.

After applying, the two patches (WPA) I finally got the option for WPA-TKIP. It has only taken 4-5 months I think.

My wireless card got an IP address, and hey presto, I could get on the net. (This was short lived).

I now have a new problem. Everytime I boot up the laptop, the card works for maybe 5 minutes, and then I seem to loose conectivity. I cannot ping the local lan, and I cannot see the net (obvious).

I check the signal strenght, this reports "excellent". So what this new problem is I have no idea.

The two patches I mentioned are : 815485 &

826942 http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826942

I know that most of us applied the first one, but the second does fix many broken solutions. I spoke to friends who also had problems in the past, and once the second patch applied things started to work better.

Good luck.
