I’ve been hearing a lot of hype about the new WiMax chip that Intel promises to push, having up to a 30 mile radius, 70 Mbps and so forth, but is it too soon to start planning for the future or can we start implementing this standard today. 802.16 is the latest entry in the world of wireless networking technology and broadband connectivity. From what I’ve read, it’s going to be a serious alternative to DSL, cable modems, leased lines, and all the other broadband networks. It seems to me that 802.16 and PDAs could eventually replace cell phones for wireless telephone service. This is sure to be a very interesting topic and I was wondering what your thoughts are on this?

Thanks for any comments and regards

I have not heard much but I was reading in ACM about the upcoming and competitor 802.20 spec. Also, there is 802.16a and 802.16e. I beleive the latter is the one that can achieve the distances and has increased power usage. But I have not heard of anyone using any products based on these technologies in the trade rags yet. Check out http://www.bbwexchange.com/ they sometimes have news about 802.16..

Yes, 802.16e specs are being based on the existing 802.16a standard and we should begin to see these products hit the market in under a year, while 802.20 is just starting from scratch so these products may be awhile. That’s a great link. I’ll read through it and try to share what I learn. Thanks
