Hi all,

I've done a lot of searching on this and haven't found anything useful, so I thought I'd give you guys a run.

I'm a college student and am unfortunately unable to use most of the online resources at my school without logging into the Novell (blech...) server on campus etc. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to work through my router. I need the firewall for two reasons (aside from basic security):

1. I have a network HP Laserjet 2100 that I would prefer not to be exposed to the entire school.
2. There is a 2GB per 3 day transfer limit on each port on campus. Once you hit that, they effectively cut off the network from that port... ugh. I'd rather not deal with that when transferring large amounts of data between my own machines.

Is there any way to make Novell work through my router or am I pretty much SOL?

Thanks!

Ari

Something like this is really tough to get help on, because those that can figure it out would need to see it (locally) or do it on a regular basis. I would suggest you seek out one of the 20-something network geeks/gurus that work on campus thru student aid or something. Your much more likely to find a solution to this problem that way.

Thats all I can suggest, without actually being there.

Hey, thanks for the response.

I managed to get it working via some i/o traffic logging (the one on the router). Seems you need ports 524 and 427 open (and forwarded).

Unfortunately, it only works for one machine until Linksys decides to add port triggering to this router.

I can't call the network gurus b/c we aren't really supposed to have routers on campus. "The mess up the network..." is what they told me when I casually asked.

Pleased to see you've got it working - but why critiise the software system for a hardware problem? NDS is the most secure, fastest and most effective network managment system - hence it use by government departments and educational institutes. Study NDS and learn what Active Directory could become if MIcrosoft knew about networking.

Glad to hear you got it straight. You have become your own guru. :)

I just don't like having third party SW on my machine if I don't need to. The functionality my school provides could be given in a multitude of other ways other than via Netware.

I can't do much to change it, so I'll live with it.

Hi,

Netware uses these ports for SLP to locate servers, netware 4 used to use SAP for this. Thats why you need those ports open on any fireware.

P.S NDS is the Dogs and totaly agree microsoft are where novell were with directory systems 5-10 years ago

I don't doubt that Novell is good software-- I just see no reason to have it on my machine other than to print, and the security they use on the printers is utterly nonexistant. Sort of defeats the purpose, but again... not much I can do about it.
