I applied Win2k patch to my bosses brand new computer today to close yet another hole. He was surfing the Internet (via the wireless network) moments before I worked on it. When the machine rebooted, Windows reported that it couldn't load the drivers for the device (Linksys WUSB11) and the WLAN Monitor wasn't in the tray. I unplugged it from the USB port, plugged it back in and it fired right up. I rebooted two times and the same thing happenned. Anybody know what's going on?

He said he's been having trouble with it for the last week, but couldn't give specifics. This might not be a result of the patch.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

I browsed http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm.html and http://kb.linksys.com/cgi-bin/om_isapi.dll?clientID=449395 but neither had anything specific to your issue. Symentec's site may have some anwers if you dig a little deeper. Good Luck...

If he did more than a trivial amount of surfing (connected to a live connection longer than about 15-20 minutes) and he's running 2k or xp then chances are he has the msblast worm or one of the variants. Before doing anything else you should get rid of the worm. After that you might try uninstalling the patch to see if things start working again. Leaving it out is not an option though. Remember to check for the variants.
