Larry fokro 07-29-2003, 01:09 PM WHta's the difference between the two? I have read the documentation, but can someone describe it to me in not so big words? lwheeler 07-29-2003, 01:22 PM The IOS version gives you the Cisco CLI commands and options, instead of the MENU driven interface for telnet/SSH configuration, it also has a differnet WEB "type" interface for configuring and managing the AP. It basically gives you all the configuration options just as a Cisco router or switch has, with regards to authentication and other similar features. Larry oshea85 07-30-2003, 06:21 AM I've done what you are thinking of doing...I like the IOS version much better. Some of the more advanced configs are trickier to achieve...but there is at least one thing you can do with the IOS version that you can't with the VxWorks: the AP can act as a standalone or backup LEAP server for small-medium offices. This is very valuable to small offices that can't justify a full-blown Cisco Secure Access Control Server, or for remote-site-survivability, or for home users that know what they are doing. I like being able to run LEAP at home without going over the WAN to get auth'd by an ACS. Also, I think we are approaching the end of the VxWorks OS on the Aironet line. I think it's better to get used to it now... But, my main reason for preferring the IOS version is that the CLI is just so much better. I often have to telnet or SSH into other networks to service APs, and the VxWorks CLI is just terrible, often unusable... lwheeler 07-30-2003, 08:46 AM The "menu" interface for VxWorks is a pain in the butt, especially if you don't use it all the time. eyebeem 07-30-2003, 12:38 PM VX works software is End of Life for Cisco - hence the new VX works to IOS conversion tool you can now download from Cisco oshea85 07-30-2003, 07:56 PM posted by eyebeem VX works software is End of Life for Cisco - hence the new VX works to IOS conversion tool you can now download from Cisco I don't find that information on CCO. I see that 350's are EOL, but VxWorks is still supported, shipping, and field firmware releases are still being made. oshea85 07-30-2003, 08:11 PM lwheeler: The "menu" interface for VxWorks is a pain in the butt, especially if you don't use it all the time. the menu-cli on the VxWorks APs is up there with the worst of all time. I have an open tac case on it now. the web gui's alright. but the new software's got the best interfaces, hands down. wi-fiplanet.com
