Applications to 'addon' to WinXP's wap stuff...

Hey all, i just bought my new compaq preario laptop running 802.11g. My question is this. I dont like Windows XP's "network status" for the WAP protocol. It gives 5 bars to symbolize your Wireless connection. I would like something more descriptive that can replace it.. AND if possible, keeps track of WAP downtimes. Maybe even ping an "on-network" connection (i.e. my router) to see if the WAP went down, or the cable modem...

Anyone got advice? or know of something like this stuff?
