Hi everyone. This is not your usual setup I'm sure...

I work on a cruise ship and my buddy and I both want to network our computers together to share files with etc.. So we both have an 802.11b card in our laptops and I also picked up a Belkin 802.11b AP as well...

The only way we can get our machines to talk is to put the Belkin AP in his cabin right by the port hole to the outside of the ship, and then of couse his Pccard talks to the AP which is only a few feet away and then my cabin is about 300 feet down the ship and I have my Orinoco card with an external antannea sitting right by my window and I they will talk but only at 1 bar strenght and 1-2mbps, which is very slow.. but at least it works.. If we try an indoor setup it won't work because there is so much metal on the ship with fire doors etc..

So my question is this...

We'd like to have some more speed which would require more signal strength so if I were to buy another access point and put it in my cabin by the window then we'd both have an AP in our cabins by the window.. Would the signal strength go up?

If anyone has any ideas if this work work or a better way we can get our wireless network to work better please let me know.. Moving closer to each other is not an option unfortunatly...

TIA

Spudz,

You might want to try getting a pair of ethernet bridges or APs that work in Bridge mode - these are designed to put together two segements. Alternatively, the belkin is really designed for in-home use. You may want to try an AP that is designed for outdoor use. Granted, these cost a bit more money, but you may be able to pick up one on e-bay.
