If your going to do a project on WLAN security, your going to have to know about WLAN security. I doubt anyone here is going to tell you how to "hack".

Plan on several months of researching just to get the basics down. Some EXAMPLES of the things you need to know for the basics would be:

1) The different standards and what makes them different

2) 802.11 protocol (the 3 types of frames, authentication & association ect)

3) The equipment and RF behavior (different types of antenna and their coverage area etc)

Fast forward several months

Now you need to learn linux if you don't already know it. 99% of wireless security analysis tools are written for linux. You don't need to be a pro, but you do need to get pretty familar with it. Check out Xandros cause it's pretty easy, Red Hat is better but also harder.

Now you can learn about security! If you have gotten this far, its pretty obvious where to go and what to learn next. ;)

You admittedly don't know anything about hacking... yet you want to put on a project that demonstrates hacking into a WLAN.... And we have no idea how much you know or don't know about TCP/IP, packet headers, proofing, etc.

Why don't you do a google search on hacking and hacking techniques and start there. There are actually primers on the web about hacking techniques and play-by-play accounts of how white-hat hackers have down there deeds. I actually recently read a play-by-play of a white-hat that actually used an AP as part of his hacking pursuit.

It's not confusing, but there is a lot to know just as background about how to hack things. The point is usually the same: steal a passwd/SAM file and go from there. But getting those kinds of files is the trick.

But you should do your own homework and footwork. Do a google search and you'll find plenty of info on hacking and its techniques.

If/when you have some specific questions about WLAN security, come back and people will probably be more than happy to help you out. But until then, you need to do some reading.

One way is to find some honest people who seem to know what they are doing and pretend you are doing a class project on hacking. See if you can rely on their sympathy and naiveté and convince them to tell you how to hack into people's wireless networks. (This is called "social engineering.")

Or you can just surf the net and find malacious websites that explain it all in detail. I'd recommend going with the latter option because all you have to do is read what's already there instead of trying to dupe people into typing it for you. It does require knowledge on how to use a web browser...

the issue was security NOT hacking, even so it might have given that impression...i shall be more clear next time

Wireless security is 90% about what to do about keeping hackers and hacking away from your internet network. Can't separate that out.

Perhaps then you should have asked how you can "demonstrate NOT hacking into a WLAN." :) I don't quite know how to demonstrate not doing something. Sorry if my reply was a bit pointed.

Just a comment about learning hacking: It is traditionally learned by reading, not asking. It's not like there's any shortage of hacker knowledge posted on the Internet. Use a browser, search, read, search, read, read some more...
