I'm new to 802.11 and wireless networking (familiar with the concept, just never actually used it before).

Can an access point work as a stand-alone unit? Obviously it would need to talk to another access point, but... well, I guess it might be easier if I just explain my situation.

Currently I have a computer and DSL router in one room, and I'd like to be able to provide access to the DSL connection in another room. This "other room" is a living room with home-entertainment components but no computer, so I can't just use a "normal" 802.11 PCI or PCMCIA card.

So, if I have a wireless access point connected to the DSL router, can I just use anouther access point in a different room (without a computer) to access the network?

What would you recommend as a cheap, reliable pair of access points for home use?

You seem to want to share the DSL connection with home entertainment components -- is this for a ReplayTV? What other components would need the broadband Internet access? Even if they do need it, chances are they only come equiped with Ethernet, which means stringing cable, or get an Ethernet to Wi-Fi adapter like the D-Link DWL-810 (Read about it here (http://www.80211-planet.com/news/article/0,4000,1481_1037581,00.html)), which should have gone on sale this month. Product Web site is here (http://www.dlink.com/../../products/dwl810/).
