Wireless Cash Register

In many stores there are networked cash registers and a central server that is used to track the sales. This is typically networked using a wired LAN. However, in some locations it's too difficult to install a wired LAN due to the difficulty of making the CAT 5 runs, or because the store location is temporary (like in a mall kiosk). The obvious answer is to use a WLAN. However, in this application, security is important due to the nature of the information.

Would you trust a wireless LAN to such an application?

If the WLAN was set-up properly with security measures in place, I see no reason not to trust a wireless cash register any less than the hard-wired versions.

You could use Proxims OpenAir radio. 1.6mbps non 802.11. Its fast enough for most applications and easy to design a wirelessLAN that can take lots of data.

Because everyone is focusing on 802.11 radios most consumers are buying into that.

If one uses a non-standards based radio then it is very unlikley that a consumer or hacker would have such a compatiable radio. These days all computer manufactures are pushing 802.11 and OpenAir is nowhere to be seen, only in industrial applications.

There are some good reasons to go for closed system like OpenAir.

Symbol Technologies have a trick in that they have a 802.11 radio based on the frequency hopping portion of the standard. Its a standards based radio but who else hase one, humm! Just Symbol I think.

It is a standards radio (802.11) just a hopper and not a DS radio.

MoleStrangler, your application is very good. The security will become a none issue. A Bluetooth enabled we-com virtual wallet will send the data packet encrypted. So the security will be built into the device.

What are our thoughts?

What about the software.. I once saw a guy setting up cash register software on a Windows-based machine.. What do you think is the most commonly used?
