There's a world of difference between the two. An access point is simply to connect wireless computers to a wired LAN. The wireless router is so that you can connect multiple computers (wired and wireless) to a single Internet connection.

basically a accespoint/router is the combination of a acces point and a traditional switch. From a network perspective if u want to connect mutiple wired and wireless stations u would need either (combination of Access point and a normal switch) or a wireless Router which will do both

Wirless AP -> Is a bridge (MAC layer) between the Wired LAN and Wireless LAN. It implements the functionality as what MAC layer should implement.
Wireless AP Router = Wireless AP + Some/all functionality that an IP layer holds like IP forwarding, firewall, NAT/NAPT, Static/dynamic Routing etc etc.
