Opportunity seems unlimited. The network value grows with implementation. Looking for ideas and more capital. disque71 05-20-2002, 06:23 PM What is a meshy laser network? xmbor 05-20-2002, 07:19 PM Originally posted by disque71 What is a meshy laser network? mesh topology: A network topology in which there are at least two nodes with two or more paths between them. MESH Mesh is a network topology in which devices are connected with many redundant interconnections between network nodes. In a true mesh topology every node has a connection to every other node in the network. There are two types of mesh topologies: full mesh and partial mesh. Full mesh topology occurs when every node has a circuit connecting it to every other node in a network. Full mesh is very expensive to implement but yields the greatest amount of redundancy, so in the event that one of those nodes fails, network traffic can be directed to any of the other nodes. Full mesh is usually reserved for backbone networks. Partial mesh topology is less expensive to implement and yields less redundancy than full mesh topology. With partial mesh, some nodes are organized in a full mesh scheme but others are only connected to one or two in the network. Partial mesh topology is commonly found in peripheral networks connected to a full meshed backbone. Now take a mesh fiber network and snip the fibers and add lasers to connect them and you have a meshy laser network. It is a little meshier than a pure fiber network.:D joshmccormack 06-13-2002, 08:50 AM I'm looking for some people who'd be interested in working on an idea I came up with when having a discussion with someone at Forbes. It involves wi-fi security (war driving type thing), though I think services, like set-up, would be a natural extension. If anyone is interested email me and we can discuss. I'm in New York City, though I'm not sure how local this would have to be, so if you're elsewhere don't necessarily ignore. Josh joshmccormack@travelersdiary.com HonoluaBay 06-26-2002, 01:17 AM Very interested. I have actually begun, and deployed two so far (nothing big..just sharing out a cable connection at a few small businesses)...but the market is going to explode over the next year or two. I am very interested and have indept 802.11 expertise. I am on the West Coast. Please contact me if you are interested at simulation80211@yahoo.com Uptown_hr 07-16-2002, 07:50 AM I have many business ideas with wifi. Infact I have a business of my own. It's on the very begging stage but we have everything organized and ready to go. For the time being, we are looking for investors, so if any of you are interested we can talk more. fperry 07-17-2002, 09:14 PM I'm interested in starting somthing as well. I have 12 years in the wireless industry designing and troubleshooting cellular networks. I have set up my own network at home (cable based w/3 PC's) and have my own website and server. I've been looking @ Boingo but not 100% set on it. My biggest concern is connectivity to the rest of the world. Do I buy/rent a T1/DSL, ect at the Hotspot location or do I "rent" bandwidth on the locations existing facilities? Has anyone else thought about this or possibly have better ideas?? rdohn2 07-19-2002, 08:51 PM YES! I have been mulling this over for a while now...I'm also in the working stages of builiding a businesss....lets keep this thread alive!!! On the note of Leasing some Bandwith from a private network. YES....I have thought of this and am wondering what means are necissary to assure your provider that you will not damage their network and not hog the bandwidth???? Can they manage your IP address of the equipment that you are using and bandwidth throttle it?????? I'd love a reply cause I DON"T KNOW!!! :( But I am looking at using a hopital in one area for this exact purpose...I am yet to talk to and contact the right people...but I'd like to be armed with the right information before going in to talk to them! I have heard and talked to a few companies that are producing commerical AP's for public use...they are of course all start ups and new to the market...but they are there...we just have to implement them!!!! Anyone got some spare venture capital sitting around?!? I have a business plan! Gimme a buz if anyone wants to chat on the subject. admin@aquanetwireless.com Later! Reuben fperry 07-19-2002, 09:12 PM I Have Created a Yahoo Group to discuss this topic http://groups.yahoo.com/group/WiFiStartups Please join and tell your friends to join as well. There seems to be more that enough people interested in the topic. I even have an idea for getting capital to start us out. Let's talk You can e-mail me directly as well at perry942@comcast.net rdohn2 07-20-2002, 12:31 PM I'm there! As a matter of fact...I'm curious...of the people that have replied to the inital question thus far...who is a network engineer, strict business person, enterpenure, technicaian etc.....the reason I ask is if we are all a bunch of engineers we will all think it's a great idea...but if there are some people with REAL market experience that can provide creative and helpful input on maketing and user satisfaction...then maby we'll all actually get somewhere...and not just sit here and spin our wheels all day long.... I talked to a sucessful marketing guru buddy of mine last night and he highlighted the steps needed to make something like this happen...especially if you don't have the capital up front or resouces(infrastructure) in place to just "do it". I will rasie the questions he asked me on the Yahoo forum....I'd love to get some in put on what he asked me...I don't QUITE have the numbers to properly answer his questions and maby some of you know where to got to get them... Take care all and see you on Yahoo!!!! Reuben admin@aquanetwireless.com disque71 08-06-2002, 02:46 PM Does anyone have a business set up? If so are you looking to create a subsidiary in Pittsburgh and all the surrounding area, Mid Atlantic. let me know rdohn2 08-06-2002, 03:11 PM disque71 what's your e-mail address? Rdohn unwired 08-06-2002, 03:39 PM Hello all, I saw yor posts and had to reply. I currently run a wireless ISP turning existing businesses into wireless hotspots. We partner with businesses to do this. We have a gateway/firewall that runs on Linuxand is written in Java. This does port control and prevents useage without authenication. Only site they can get to is ours until they register and login. We have a pilot shop that has been in production for 4 months. Our biggest set back to this point has been marketing but it has worked out for bugs to be fixed without too much exposure. Now we have a solid product which is inexpensive to implement. The biggest hassle is finding someone to deal with to handle credit cards. We have done this with Authorise.net but believe me thisis a headache. We have recently ventured into a R+D partnership with a company to provide us a backend to handle allof our cc headaches. Ideally authentication will behandled too. With all of the authenication and credit card processing in one centralised space we good branch out to cover the US or even the world. Cheaper than Boingo or Wayport, or Colubris (smartaccess point maker). If you have questions or interest let me know.
