What kind of wireless networking tools would you want? Be it for troubleshooting, site survey, etc...

I'm just curious to what other people are using, or want they wish they had.

Symbol Technologies has a 2846 model with a 802.11b NIC built in to do site surveys with. I find that invaluable.

Wireless tools need to help installers define the boudary of coverage for particular access points. Security analysis is also very important.

For troubleshooting, you need an 802.11b packet analyzer and sometimes a spectrum analyzer.

For testing, usually any given vendor's site survey app is fine.

I have tested and used the following products as low cost alternatives..

Sniffers

You can pay upwards of over 3k or you can use the following:

http://www.linkferret.ws/wireless/wireless.htm

http://www.networkchemistry.com/products/wsp100/index.html

Both are very good and stable. Each are under $300.00.

Spectrum analyzers.

A spectrum analyzer (for 2.4ghz) can cost you from 3k for a Yellow Jacket and over 10k for a tektronics or Agilent(new or used)

I have found and tested the following for under $500.00.

http://www.aerocomm.com/OEM/SA.htm

The software on the site is the old version, the unit is shipping with a windows vector based software.

The SA3000 is very good, I have used it for almost a month now and it picks up the interference and logs peaks etc. Its not as fast as a 10k unit but for site surveys, troubleshooting or just learning you cannot beat that price..

Have fun...
