Compatibility between wireless NICs and routers

When setting up a wireless network, can wireless NICs from one manufacturer be coupled with a router from another manufacturer? Also, what's the better way to go, DLINK, Lynksis or NetGear?

Yes, I am using a netgear card with a Linksys router. I tried the Linksys card at first but had nothing but problems, so I returned it and got the netgear...works perfectly.
