Do you think there is a great need for wireless networking using 802.11 technology? How readily do you think businesses would be willing to convert to wireless or initially set up their networks using 802.11?

How readily do you think businesses would be willing to convert to wireless or initially set up their networks using 802.11? ua549 05-01-2002, 08:14 AM I don't think business will convert to wireless when they have a wired network. A wired network, especially a switched one, is at least one order of magnitude faster than a shared 802.11b network. Business may deploy wireless to fill in gaps in an existing network because it is quick and easy to deploy even though the cost can be substantially greater than a wired network. There are certain kinds of businesses that can take advantage of wireless. Those that readily come to mind are warehousing and retail because they typically have very short transaction message sizes and operate in large open spaces that are ideal for wireless. Small businesses that are creating a network for the very first time may choose to deploy wireless because of the ease and the need to support vary few nodes. Once again this is an ideal situation for wireless. wirelessassist 12-27-2004, 07:53 PM This post is 2 years old - what about now? opinions? wi-fiplanet.com
