XBox 360 Hard drive question

I setup Tversity on a PC and my sons Xbox 360 works excellent with it after signing into live and getting an update!
I'm looking at getting one for my Parents as we are on the same lan .

I see a core system with out a hard drive. for 200.00 on sale
Question do I need a hard drive to install these updates from live or a usb stick or nothing at all?

As far as I know Alan, you need the hard drive (http://www.onthexbox.com/2008/10/new-xbox-360-update-requires-a-hard-drive/). Mines always had one so I cant say for sure if all updates need it.

I picked up a arcade version 360 with the 256 MB memory card . I had to make a live account but all is well it took all the updates needed to the memory card and works EXCELLENT! The 1 month free gold membership is included . This box will be for streaming vids and pics. And was cheaper than any other hardware that works with tversity I could find.
